Do I Qualify for Free Tax Prep?
  • Do I Qualify for Free Tax Prep?

Use this tool to get a general idea of if your return is out of scope.
  • Did your household income exceed $69,000 during the tax year?*
  • If you are unsure of your total income for the tax year, that's okay! We will calculate your Adjusted Gross Income (AGI) when we begin preparing your taxes to determine if you are eligible for free tax preparation.

Please note: If it is determined your household income is over $69,000 we will not be able to prepare your tax return.

  • Our volunteers are only trained to prepare simple tax returns.

We are trained by the IRS to prepare returns in specific tax areas. If a return is beyond our training, we will refer you to a professional preparer. For the complete list of tax forms that we can and cannot prepare, please refer to the IRS's VITA Program Scope of Service.

If you select Yes to any of the below statements based on your tax situation, then we will not be able to prepare your tax return. In these scenarios, we recommend consulting with a professional tax preparer.

  • Did you have any self-employment income during the tax year?*
  • Did you have more than $50,000 in business expenses?
  • Do you conduct business from your home and plan to use the home office deduction on your tax return?
  • Did you have a net loss for the tax year (expenses exceed income) or business debt canceled (1099-C or 1099-A)?
  • Did you have any inventory related to your self-employment?
  • Did you have any employees during the tax year?
  • Do you have any income from rental properties?*
  • Did you sell any virtual or crypto currency during the tax year?*
  • We're sorry.

Based on your responses to this form, you do not qualify for free tax preparation service with CASH Oregon this year because your return is out of scope.
